Kate Hogeveen has been part of Goodwill’s Adult Day Services (ADS) since 2013. She says that the activities, friends, and staff are what keep her interested in coming back every day. In particular, Kate enjoys that she can make her own decisions and has a say about with whom she spends her time. Kate makes her wishes known to those around her.
Kate is a true self-advocate and is always excited to learn more about how to help herself and others. Over the years, Kate has participated in the Ohio Speech & Debate Association, Project STIR, and other advocacy groups. One of her favorite things to do is head to the Synergy Conference in Sandusky, Ohio. Kate is considering writing to the Synergy organizers to let them know there should be a changing table in one of the restrooms at the hotel. This is just one example of how Kate advocates for herself and others.
Kate loves the chance to be a part of her community each day she attends ADS. She volunteers and likes the fact she can help while having fun. Life Care Alliance and Cat Welfare are her favorite volunteer locations.
Kate says Goodwill has provided her with opportunities that she might not have if she were not part of the program. A few examples of this include going to Snow Trails for tubing, kayaking at the Adaptive Sports Connection, and being part of Team Heart and Sole.
To conclude, as Kate always says when asked, she is “living her best life.”
