Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & 1/2 Marathon Get Extra Dose Of “Goodwill”
Goodwill Columbus will be with runners every step of the way during the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and 1/2 Marathon on Sunday, October 20 in Downtown Columbus.
During the two days preceding the marathon, on Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19, runners will gather at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and 1/2 Marathon Expo at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, to meet representatives at more than 120 fitness booths. (For expo times please visit: www.columbusmarathon.com)
Goodwill Columbus will have a booth at the expo, selling gently used athletic apparel at rock bottom prices. This is the second year the nonprofit has been invited to have a retail presence at the expo. Clothing for sale will include gloves, running shorts, t-shirts, pants, jackets and bathrobes.
“Shopping Goodwill Columbus is a smart solution for marathoners who don’t want to invest hundreds of dollars into clothing they will likely shed during the race,” said Tim Salvato, Vice President of Donated Goods/Retail for Goodwill Columbus.
Marathon runners often shed clothing at the start of a long race, leaving city streets littered with discarded apparel. Goodwill employees and volunteers will follow the runners for the first four miles of the race to help gather the clothes for Goodwill Columbus's retail stores and make sure they go to a good cause.
"It's a win-win situation for us — we love supporting Goodwill Columbus and our athletes love getting cheap throw-away clothing that will keep them warm at the start," said Darris Blackford, Race Director of the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon & 1/2 Marathon.
Untarnished clothing collected during the race will be sold at Goodwill Columbus retail locations to help fund programs that build independence, quality of life and work opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities and other barriers.
“Funding our wonderful programs is what Goodwill Columbus’s social enterprise business model is all about,” said Margie Pizzuti, Goodwill Columbus President and CEO. “The support from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and 1/2 Marathon has been tremendous and we are so appreciative.”
